Titanium and Inconel: which shops state them

690 shops state titanium and 411 state Inconel. They are not interchangeable skills.

These are two different problems that get named together

Titanium is not hard. It is gummy, it work-hardens, it holds heat at the cutting edge because it conducts so poorly, and it will catch fire as chips if you treat it like aluminum. The discipline is heat management: sharp tools, constant feed, and flood coolant that never stops.

Inconel and the other nickel superalloys are a harder problem. They work-harden faster, tear tool edges rather than shearing cleanly, and punish any dwell. Tool life is measured in minutes. A shop can be good at titanium and genuinely bad at Inconel, and the two claims sitting next to each other on a capability page do not mean the same thing.

The populations are different sizes, and that is informative

690 shops state titanium. 411 state Inconel.

Texas has a tighter titanium-to-Inconel ratio (139 to 102) than California (432 to 229). Nickel alloys are downhole and turbine materials as well as aerospace ones, which may be part of the reason.

327 shops state both — 203 in California, 58 in Ohio and 66 in Texas. The asymmetry is the useful part: 80% of Inconel shops also state titanium, but only 47% of titanium shops state Inconel. Inconel capability is close to a subset of titanium capability, which is the numerical form of the argument above — they are sold under one heading and they are not one skill.

What actually separates a real superalloy shop

Rigidity and spindle. Superalloy cutting loads are high and constant; a light machine chatters, and chatter in Inconel is scrap.

Coolant delivery. Through-spindle high-pressure coolant is close to a requirement for Inconel, and a shop that runs it will say so unprompted.

Tooling spend. A shop machining Inconel seriously is buying carbide and ceramic inserts at a rate that shows in its quote. A price that looks like aluminum work is not a bargain — it is a shop that has not run the material.

Inspection. These parts are usually flight or pressure critical. Ask what is in the metrology room. Across this directory shops name 333 Mitutoyo and 140 Zeiss items of inspection equipment on their own sites.
